To my fellow ultrarunners, friends, volunteers and followers of Capitol Peak Ultra events:
It's been 14 years since I started directing the Capitol Peak Ultra events, including 13 fat ass events (2002-2015), one 50k event (2004), and 11 50-mile ultra events (2005-2015). It has been a fun and rewarding part of my life to provide support to the ultrarunning community through these events. Although two knee surgeries have ended my competitive running days, ultrarunning has always and will remain in my heart.
After much thought on the matter, I have decided after fourteen years to pass on the “baton” of leadership for the Capitol Peak Ultra races. As you know, in 2015 James, Matt, and Kerri of Rainshadow Running were able to co-direct both races with me to keep Capitol Peak alive and well for another year. Rainshadow Running was created by James Varner, who was also my co-director in the first years of Capital Peak. I am so thankful for the help James, Matt, and Kerri provided in 2015. However, since I've made the decision to no longer direct these Capitol Peak events, Rainshadow has also decided to not take these events on themselves and direct them without me.
My departure from the leadership of Capital Peak Ultras has been the point of much discussion in the Olympia trail running community. Fellow trail runners Herb Reeves and David Mora and others in the Olympia Trail Runners have graciously offered to take over the New Capitol Peak January and April events.
I trust Herb and Dave will do a great job at directing these races. Both have been involved with these races for many years and know all the Capitol Forest trails and procedures for directing races in Capitol Forest. The New Capitol Peak events will be different than previous years' events, so stay tuned for distances to run, trails to be run on, and more info.
If you have questions about the upcoming races in 2016, please email [email protected] for additional information. A new website and race dates and other info will be posted sometime in early November.
I am so thankful for all the volunteers, family and friends who have been at the Capitol Peak races. I am especially thankful to my parents (Bill and Helene Pearch) for their behind the scenes efforts. I couldn't have done it without all that support! I also appreciate the work of Friends of Capitol Forest and South Puget Sound Mobile Search and Rescue for their many hundreds of hours spent volunteering at the races or helping to maintain trails in Capitol Forest.
Thanks for a fun fourteen years, and here's to many more years of the New Capitol Peak!
