hyak halloween 25k
october 19 2024 snoqualmie pass, WA
This event takes place on Snoqualmie Tribe Ancestral Lands
Overview
Let's have fun on the trails and celebrate Halloween by going through the 2.25 mile long, 110 year old, super creepy, Snoqualmie Tunnel just days before it closes for the winter. Then up to an alpine lake through all the beautiful fall colors and then finish by going through that creepy tunnel again! Culturally respectful and non-gory costumes highly encouraged. And no we won't be adding anything scary to the tunnel, it's already scary enough as it is. With only 1800 feet of elevation gain and with slightly more than half the course on smooth gravel trail we feel like this is an excellent course for folks who are new to trail running and looking to ease into the sport as well as more experienced folks looking for a fast course or just to have fun. Also by giving folks up to 7.5 hours to complete the course folks would only have to average slightly over two miles per hour meaning that most folks could walk the entire route and still finish on time. We think there's something for everyone with this event and we want everyone to feel welcome and able to take their time while enjoying this beautiful place!
This run/hike will not be a typical “race” and we will not be posting public results. We will time participants for tracking and safety reasons, and folks can still ask us if they want to know their time. But our overall goal with choosing not to post public results for this one is to de-emphasize the competitive element of this event and to highlight the opportunity for mindful recreation. We’d love for you to have time to stop and enjoy Annette Lake, to enjoy socializing and to find moments to really appreciate the natural environment.
The Hyak Halloween 25K takes place on Snoqualmie Tribe Ancestral Lands. The tribe has requested that folks who use their lands for recreation take care and be mindful of their impacts. From their July 2021 press release “The Tribe welcomes those who respectfully enjoy our beautiful ancestral lands,” said McKenna Sweet Dorman, a Snoqualmie Tribal Member who serves as the assistant director of governmental affairs & special projects with the Tribe. “Unfortunately, because of the exponential increase in outdoor recreation coupled with the selfish and destructive practices of recreators who are unaware, these lands are being loved to death. The Tribe is asking its neighbors to show respect when interacting with these lands so that future generations may also experience their unique beauty. The Snoqualmie Tribe encourages Washingtonians to heal past damage and avoid future impacts through the practice of appropriate land acknowledgment, which includes educating themselves about the lands’ history and connection to the Snoqualmie People, recreating in moderation, respecting rules about littering and staying on designated trails, and supporting the Snoqualmie Tribe’s stewardship and education efforts.” For members of the Snoqualmie Tribe we will waive the race entry fee, please email us at [email protected]

Course Details
- The course will be well marked with yellow and black arrow signs at each junction and pink/black checkered confidence ribbons every 1/2 mile or so.
- The course is a combination of two trails: the moderately steep and somewhat rooty/rocky single track Annette Lake Trail and the wide, flat, mostly smooth, gravel Palouse to Cascades Trail(P2C).
- Route Description: The first quarter of the course is on the P2C Trail, which includes going through The Snoqualmie Tunnel at the very start. The middle 7 miles is on the Annette Lake Trail, you'll leave the P2C Trail and head uphill on the Annette Lake Trail to Annette Lake. At the lake you will be at mile 7 in the race and you'll arrive at Lake Aid Station. This aid station will only have water and minimal food and supplies because volunteers will have to hike 3.5 miles to get it all up there--there's no road access to the lake). When leaving the Lake Aid Station you'll head back down the Annette Lake Trail, cross over the P2C, and continue all the way to the Annette Lake Trailhead where you'll come to the Trailhead Aid Station at mile 10.5 (this is a full service aid station). When leaving Trailhead Aid Station you'll go back up the Annette Lake Trail for about 1 mile and then turn left onto the P2C Trail. The last 4.25 miles of the route will be exact same as the first 4.25 miles but in reverse so you'll go through the tunnel again when you're almost to the finish at the Hyak Trailhead.

Cut-offs
In order to keep our event on schedule and within the time limits of our permits, we have cut off times at the aid stations. If you are not leaving the aid station by the cut off time, you will be given a ride back to the finish area by staff or volunteers.
Although these are public trails, you are participating on them as a registered participant of our event and by signing up, you agree to follow our rules and conditions. Our sweeps will be leaving right at cut off time, taking down course markings with them. If you refuse to leave the course after cut off and end up getting lost or injured, requiring search and rescue, our permitting agency could look at that as negligence on our end (allowing folks on the course with no course markings or after the time we agreed to stop people). We take this rule seriously and as it puts our permits in jeopardy, if any one violates this rule, they may be subject to a ban from future events.

**Even though the cutoff at the finish line is technically at 4:30pm any one who makes it out of Trailhead Aid Station by the cutoff there and then completes the course will get an official finish even if they cross the finish line after the finish line cutoff time. But we do ask that folks do the best they can to finish by the cutoff time.

Crew Access
This course has just one location where your crew (friends and family) can come see you on the route and that is at the Trailhead Aid Station at Annette Lake Trailhead. It's a 12-15 minute drive and there is limited parking at the trailhead. Also the road to the trailhead can be pretty rough. Here are driving directions. The Annette Lake Trailhead is a U.S. Forest Service trailhead and requires a parking pass. You can buy the appropriate pass online in advance if you don't already have one. Here are the passes that are acceptable:
NOTE: The Washington State Discover Pass is not applicable as this is federal land not state land.

Drop Bags
There is one location for drop bags and that's at Trailhead Aid Station at mile 10.5.
For those not familiar with drop bags, it's a way for you to have certain items at specific aid stations. If you like to have a certain kind of nutrition or specific brand of electrolyte, you can put those in your bag and restock at the aid station instead of carrying it the whole way. Some people leave extra layers of clothing, gloves or hats, or dry socks in their bags. Folks are responsible for providing their own bag.
There will be a tarp set up at check-in along with duct tape and sharpies. Folks are allowed one bag per location and should be labeled with: name and bib number. Our volunteers will be transporting the bags to to the aid station and back to the finish once they close for the day at ~3:30pm.

Costume Policy
Costumes are encouraged! But we do ask that people to be thoughtful and kind in their costume choices. This means no costumes making fun of groups of people, no dressing up in a culture that is not your own (including things like Hawaiian skirts, etc.), and also please no gory or violent costumes. The tunnel is scary enough without having to see a bloody zombie running towards you in there! If you have any questions or concerns about our costume policy please email us at [email protected]

If Rainshadow Cancels an Event...
If we have to cancel an event for any reason (COVID, wildfire, acts of nature, etc.) we understand the disappointment to the participants. But it's something that does happen from time to time so you should be prepared for that possibility.
We will do our best to notify folks as soon as we can but sometimes it may be a last minute situation.
Everyone will be sent an email as soon as possible with information about the cancellation and any other pertinent info including what their options are and the deadline for letting us know their decision. If the reason for cancelling the event is something out of our control like something weather or COVID related we will likely offer folks a 50% credit towards a future event because as we see it both the participants and we at Rainshadow share the risk of a cancelled event equally.
We understand how much money, energy, and time goes into training for these events, so if we can make adjustments to our plans instead of cancelling, that is our priority, but at the end of the day, the safety of our participants, volunteers, staff, and the general public will be the main factor in our decision to cancel.
