2021 race Cancelled
Beacon Rock State Park // columbia river gorge, wa.
UPDATE 6/28/21: We are super bummed to have to cancel this race. Unfortunately we were unable to work with the state park to find a suitable way to do the race and get a permit this year. We explored alternate routes, alternate dates, alternate start/finish locations and ultimately no option was viable. We'll leave out the photos of the reaction James' body had to one of the proposed re-routes when he scouted it for the first time ever last week but that's an example of what we were up against in trying to figure out how to still hold the race.
Runners who had rolled over from the 2020 race are given the same options they were given in 2020, they can choose from the following options:
100% Rollover to 2022 or 2023
100% Credit to another Rainshaow Race
50% Refund

REGISTRATION AND RESULTS
Registration will open on January 6th, 2020 on UltraSignup. Registration will close on Saturday August 1st (there is no day of registration) The 25K will cost $105. This is a bit higher than our normal 25K registrations and the reason is that it comes with the standard all-you-can-eat pizza and free beer all day on Saturday, but also includes food on Friday evening and dinner on Saturday evening. We also are going to bring in two bands instead of just one.

DRIVING/PARKING DIRECTIONS
The start and finish of the race will be at the Beacon Rock State Park group campsite. Click here for driving directions. If you are coming from the west on highway 14, (Portland, Seattle), you will turn left onto Kueffler Road. If you are coming from the east on 14, turn right onto Kueffler Road. You will wind up this road for just over one mile and then turn left into the group camping area. There will be event parking signs posted for you to follow.
You will need a Discover Pass to park in the group camping area. There is no kiosk at the group camp so we recommend coming with one. There is a kiosk at the parking area for the actual Beacon Rock, on Highway 14. The annual pass is only $30 and the proceeds go directly to the park system.

CAMPING
The camping at the start/finish at the Beacon Rock Group Campsite is free, first come/first served, primitive and not suitable for RVs larger than 20-23'. The limit on large RVs is because the road to Group Campsite is steep, narrow, winding, and space at the site is limited. There also are not a lot of very large flat spots for leveling your RV. There will be portable toilets available at the group camp site, but no showers and no hook ups.
The space is great for tents, small RVs or camping in your car. If you are camping you should only camp along the edge of the forest, either in the main parking area or in the walk-in area--save the room in the middle of the open spaces for regular parking and for the start/finish festivities. We'll have signs, barricades and volunteers to show you the best places to camp, but try to use common sense about where to camp and keep in mind we are going to have a lot of people in a limited space. The volunteers will not be there after 9:00 pm on Friday, so if you are arriving late, do your best to park/camp along the treeline.
If you want a normal campsite you should consider camping elsewhere in the park or if you have a large RV you should stay at one of the nearby private campgrounds. Pay showers are available in the park at the Boat Launch about 2 miles away (50 cents for 3 mins).

COURSE MAPS/ELEVATION PROFILE
The course will be well marked with pink and yellow ribbon and yellow arrow signs. You should not go more than one mile without seeing a sign or ribbon. Click here for course maps, elevation profile, and turn by turn directions. GPX file coming soon.
Please study these and print them out and bring them with you if you'll want a paper map come race-day. Like all Rainshadow races, the course will be well marked, but we won't have any paper maps for runners or spectators (so print your own if you want one), and ultimately, it's each runner's responsibility to know the course.

AID STATIONS
Our races strive to use as few disposable products as possible, therefore we will not have single use cups at the aid stations. We recommend that runners carry their own cup or bottle or other drinking vessel. We will have Ultra Aspire collapsible cups for sale at the race for $5 or you can buy one in advance online and pick it up at the race.
Each aid station will be stocked with water, Nuun electrolyte drink, peanut butter & jelly sandwiches, fresh fruit, chips, pickles, and assorted cookies or candy. We will have a variety of gels, but we do ask that you only use those to supplement what you are providing for yourself. There will also be first aid supplies, sunscreen, bug spray, and feminine hygiene products for issues that arise on the course.
For the 25K there are two aid stations at mile 5.5 and 11.8.

CUT-OFFS
In order to keep our race on schedule and within the time limits of our permits, we have cut off times at the aid stations. If you are not leaving the aid station by the cut off time, you will be given a ride back to the finish area by staff or volunteers.
Although these are public trails, you are participating on them as a registered participant of our event and by signing up for the race, you agree to follow our rules and conditions for completing (or not completing) the race. Our sweeps will be leaving right at cut off time, taking down course markings with them. If you refuse to leave the course after cut off and end up getting lost or injured, requiring search and rescue, our permitting agency could look at that as negligence on our end (allowing runners on the course with no course markings or after the time we agreed to stop people). We take this rule seriously and as it puts our permits in jeopardy, if any runner violates this rule, they may be subject to a ban from future races.

CREW ACCESS/DROP BAGS
If you have friends or family who want to see you come through the aid stations, the Hardy Aid Station requires a ~2.9 mile uphill walk. To walk to the aid station: start from the Equestrian Trailhead and go up the Equestrian Trail for about 2 miles to the 2nd intersection with the Hardy Trail at which point your crew will turn left and go about 3/4 of a mile to the aid station. Our permits allow us one vehicle at the aid station, so crews are not allowed to drive to Hardy.
Due to how limited the space is at the aid station, there will not be any drop bags for this race. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

KIDS RACE
The kids 1K race will be Saturday morning at 8:30 am (shortly before the 25K starts). The distance is less than 1 kilometer and the route is a small loop on the edge of the group camp site. Parents are welcome to run with their kids if they want. Parents do need to sign a waiver for the kids to be able run. You can register them on ultrasignup or you can register them near the check in table the morning of the race.

POST RACE PARTY
We do not give out finisher's medals at any of our races, instead that money goes to providing free handmade pizza courtesy of Pizza Rocks, free craft beer and non-alcoholic drinks, and live music. This is free for all registered runners, volunteers, and their friends/family. We strive to create a welcoming community feel where runners and volunteers want to stay and hang out after they finish, cheer on their fellow runners, share trail stories and dance to live music! We promise you the finish line will be just as festive for the last runner as it is for the first finisher.
Our amazing pizza crew can accommodate just about every dietary preference (gluten free, vegan, vegetarian), so when it is your turn to grab a slice, simply make your request and they will make a special pizza for you!
The post race party is free for registered runners, their families, and volunteers (guest list will be monitored by a volunteer). Unfortunately we are not able to offer the food and drink to outside spectators. Those who appear under 30 will be asked to present ID for beer.
