volunteer lottery bypass
For our races that are lotteries, volunteers are able to earn a lottery bypass the following year. For example: someone who volunteers at Orcas Island 50K in 2019 is allowed to bypass the lottery for that race in 2020, guaranteeing them a spot in the race. We are not able to allow volunteers to bypass the lottery into any race they choose, the lottery bypass is good for that specific race. For example, someone who volunteers for Deception Pass cannot bypass the lottery for Sun Mountain. Volunteers can transfer their spot to a friend if they do not wish to run the race. Example: Joe volunteers at 2016 Gorge 100K. If he chooses, he can give his lottery bypass to Mary and she can bypass the lottery for the 2017 Gorge 100K.
Volunteers who are hoping to bypass the lottery need to register during the window when the lottery is open. Once the lottery is closed and names are drawn, the race is sold out and we cannot let any one else into the race, even if you were a volunteer the year before.
Lottery bypasses are good for either race distance the following year, so if you volunteer for the Sun Mountain 50K, you can choose to bypass the lottery for the 50K or 25K the next year. It is race specific, you cannot volunteer for Orcas in order to bypass the lottery for Gorge or vice versa.
