Overview
For 2021 we have a brand new course! We've had to make some last minute changes to where the race starts and finishes and that's made a huge change to the route. Now the entire race will take place at the spectacular Cape Perpetua Scenic Area! We still encourage everyone to keep their reservations at the Adobe even though the races won't start and finish there this year as it's just a short six-minute drive to the new start/finish at Cape Perpetua Campground. The campground is closed for the season, sorry no camping allowed there, but it allows us to park everyone there(extremely limited parking at Cape Perpetua has kept us from starting and finishing there in the past).
With starting and finishing at Cape Perpetua Scenic Area also means the course gets a major makeover. The 20M will now be a 25K with 3900ft of elevation gain. Almost all the elevation comes from two big climbs, an ~1200ft climb up Cooks Ridge Trail and a ~1500ft climb up Cummins Creek Trail. Throw in a ~400ft climb up Cape Perpetua near the end of the loop for good measure. What goes up must come down! The first downhill might be the best on the course, dropping off Cooks Ridge into Gwynn Creek is a blast! Then a cruiser down a low-traffic forest service road)I've seen elk on this road more than once!). Then for the final mile, right after getting all the amazing views on top of the cape you get to bomb down the St. Perpetua Trail and into the finish at the campground.
For the 50K runners you get to do the 25k loop twice! Yes that means 3900ft of elevation gain and 3900 feet of elevation loss times two. Yes that's 7,800ft. Yes that's 2000 more feet than what was previously planned. Yes we know that's a big difference. We think you'll love it! And we're giving everyone an extra hour with a nine hour cutoff.
And even the kids fun run gets an upgrade from 1K to 1 mile with 100ft of elevation gain! Bonus challenges for everyone!
For those of you now wondering what to expect for your time I'd suggest looking at our past results from our Beacon Rock 50K and 25K as we think that's our course most similar to this new one.

COVID Changes for 2021
Now that Oregon has eased many restrictions we have adjusted our COVID safety plans to be more relaxed but still somewhat cautious:

- Encouraging everyone to get vaccinated
- Asking that if you're sick that you stay home
- Keeping everyone as spread out as possible by either keeping races small or using "wave starts"
- Encouraging everyone(runners, volunteers, friends and family) to stay 6 feet or more apart from folks outside of their household whenever possible.
- Asking everyone(runners, volunteers, friends and family) to wear masks when they can't stay more than 6ft apart from those outside of their household, especially when in vehicles.
- Reducing contact of surfaces and increased cleaning and sanitizing of surfaces.
- Asking everyone to use hand sanitizer(or wear gloves) frequently.
- Having volunteers use gloves and masks whenever preparing or handling food and drinks.
- Asking runners, when in aid stations, to move away from the food and fluid areas to eat and drink or to take on the trail with them.
- Limited post-race party
- We ask that runners keep the numbers of crew/friend/family members to a minimum, ideally they're all from the same household.
Driving Directions & Parking
Both races start and finish at the Cape Perpetua Campground in Yachats, OR. To get there from the Adobe Resort in Yachats, turn right out of the hotel driveway on HWY 101 and head south for a little more than three miles. At 3.3 miles you'll pass the Devils Churn Day Use Area on your right, this is your warning to slow down and prepare to turn left in less than a quarter mile onto Cape Perpetua Lookout Road--look for signs that say "Cape Perpetua Day Use/Campground. After turning left immediately go right and into the campground. If the gate to the campground entrance is closed don't worry it's not locked, just open it, drive through and close it behind you. The campground is closed for the season and they're just letting use it for parking and the start/finish. No camping. And not open to the general public so please don't let anyone in that's not associated with the race.

About 3/4 of a mile into the loop/race there is a very short section of the course that goes right past the front door of the Cape Perpetua Visitor's Center where all runners will have to walk instead of run for about 100 feet to ensure we don't run over or startle unexpecting folks. There will be signs posted where this "walk zone" starts and stops and a volunteer will be stationed there as well to ensure everyone follows the rules. Having 100% compliance is essential to our ability to keep getting the permit for this race.
We will also have a course marshal stationed at a dangerous road crossing near the very end of the loop/race. The runners will be coming down the St Perpetua Trail and will almost be to the end of the loop/finishline and will cross the Cape Perpetua Lookout Road which at times can have a decent amount of traffic. For your safety, PLEASE PAY ATTENTION WHEN CROSSING THE ROAD. No finish time is worth risking your life and drivers may not see you.
Well behaved, leashed dogs are welcome. Well behaved(no stabbing) hiking poles are also welcome.
Kids 1M Fun Run course follows the 25K loop course but takes a giant short cut. The kids will start with about 1/2 a mile on the campground road then they'll turn left onto the Oregon Coast Trail briefly, cross the Cape Creek Bridge and then at the first intersection turn left on to the Giant Spruce Trail and go about 4 tenths of a mile and turn left, cross another Cape Creek Bridge and finish at the 25K starting line.

In order to keep our race on schedule and within the time limits of our permits, we have cut off times at the aid stations. If you are not leaving the aid station by the cut off time, you will be given a ride back to the finish area by staff or volunteers.

Although these are public trails, you are participating on them as a registered participant of our event and by signing up for the race, you agree to follow our rules and conditions for completing (or not completing) the race. If you refuse to leave the course after cut off and end up getting lost or injured, requiring search and rescue, our permitting agency could look at that as negligence on our part. We take this rule seriously and as it puts our permits in jeopardy, if any runner violates this rule, they may be subject to a ban from future races.

For those not familiar with drop bags, it's a way for you to have certain items at specific aid stations. If you like to have a certain kind of nutrition or specific brand of electrolyte, you can put those in your bag and restock at the aid station instead of carrying it the whole way. Some people leave extra layers of clothing, gloves or hats, or dry socks in their bags. Runners are responsible for providing their own bag.
Runners can have drop bags at the Cummins Aid Station and Campground Aid Station for the 50K and the Cummins Aid Station for the 25K mile.
There will be tarps set up at check-in, one for each aid station location, along with duct tape and sharpies. Runners are allowed one bag per location and should be labeled with: name, bib number, and aid station name. THERE WILL BE NO CREW OR SPECTATOR ACCESS AT THE CUMMINS AID STATION. Only aid station volunteers and race staff will be able to visit that aid station. There is very limited parking at the aid station and runners will be running on the road to the aid station. This is mandatory, per permits and safety considerations, and ultimately to ensure we get invited back to run this race for future years.
Crewing for 50K runners can be done at the Campground Aid Station. Getting aid from your crew out on the course (except at the Campground Aid Station) is against the rules of this race and may result in the runner being disqualified.
This is not a course that is crew friendly mainly because the Cummins Aid Station is located in a place with very limited public parking and other access points to other parts of the course also have very limited parking. Also the runners are running on the roads to all of these access points so we want to keep the vehicle traffic to a minimum. We recommend that your friends and family that join you at the race focus on themselves while you're out running and then see cross the finishline and celebrate with you there.
If they would like to go for a hike while you're out running we have three great recommendations and they are all accessible from the Cape Perpetua Campground:
Option 1, hike along the coast and visit all the cool spots like Devils Churn, Thor's Well, Cooks Chasm to get there take the trail to the visitor's center and then follow the paved trail down towards the coast from there's a bit of choose your own adventure. Distance 1 to 2.5 miles round trip; Difficulty: Easy to Moderate.
Option 2, St Perpetua Trail to Cape Perpetua Lookout and back. Amazing views of the coast from high above! Distance: 2.6 miles round trip; Difficulty: Strenuous.
Option 3: Giant Spruce Trail to you guessed it a giant spruce tree. The Sitka Spruce tree is 500 years old! Distance: 1.7 miles round trip; Difficulty: Easy.

Post Race Party
At this time the post-race party is planned to be somewhat limited out of the desire to still be cautious. There will be some food and drinks but not quite what we've done in the past. We also ask that runners keep 6ft or more from folks outside of their household. And to keep from having too large of a gathering we ask that runners keep the number of people who come to support them to a minimum ideally one person per runner but if more than one person but there is flexibility especially for those from the same household.
At this time the post-race party is planned to be somewhat limited out of the desire to still be cautious. There will be some food and drinks but not quite what we've done in the past. We also ask that runners keep 6ft or more from folks outside of their household. And to keep from having too large of a gathering we ask that runners keep the number of people who come to support them to a minimum ideally one person per runner but if more than one person but there is flexibility especially for those from the same household.

By attending one of our races you agree to accept the terms of and abide by our cancellation policy, our COVID precautions, our race rules and anti-discrimination policies, local, state and federal laws and any other logistics or arrangements you that must adhere to. These cancellation policies apply to all new transactions as of April 2 2021 including folks using credits, discounts or coupon codes. Runners who rolled over their 2020 race entries to 2021 or 2022 will still have the same cancellation options that we offered when the 2020 races were cancelled.
All runners, for any reason and at any time BEFORE SEVEN DAYS BEFORE RACE DAY , will have the following options if they cannot or chose not to run a race that they have registered for(this includes if we cancel the race for any reason):
To take advantage of these cancellation options a runner simply needs to email us at info@rainshadowrunning.com anytime BEFORE SEVEN DAYS BEFORE RACE DAY. If you do not email us BEFORE SEVEN DAYS BEFORE RACE DAY we'll assume you chose Option 3.
We are no longer allowing runners to transfer or sell their bib/race entry to another runner. If in the future we can create a simpler system to do this we might bring this option back.
Pregnancy Deferral Policy: If a runner becomes pregnant and wants to cancel their entry they are eligible for a 100% deferment credit to any Rainshadow Running race, for a period of 3 years. If they are signed up for a lottery race, they can have a lottery bypass for that specific race in any year of their choosing (in the 3 year window). Please email us at info@rainshadowrunning.com to receive the pregnancy cancellation credit.
Military Deployment Deferral Policy: If a runner becomes scheduled to deploy after registering and wants to cancel their entry they are eligible for a 100% deferment credit to any Rainshadow Running race, for a period of 3 years(or longer if it's an extended deployment). If they are signed up for a lottery race, they can have a lottery bypass for that specific race in any year of their choosing (in the 3 year window). If Rainshadow Cancels a Race...runners have the same options as listed above.
If we have to cancel an event for any reason (COVID, wildfire, acts of nature, etc) we understand the disappointment to the participants. But it something that does happen from time to time so you should be prepared for that possibility. We will do our best to notify runners as soon as we can but sometimes it may be a last minute situation. All runners will be sent an email as soon as possible with information about the cancellation and any other pertinent info including what their options are(see the options above) and the deadline for letting us know their decision. If it's a "last-minute" cancellation where the race is cancelled less than a week before race day we will extend the deadline for the runner to notify us of their preferred option.
We understand how much money, energy, and time goes into training for an ultramarathon, so if we can make adjustments to our race plans instead of cancelling, that is our priority, but at the end of the day, the safety of our runners, volunteers, staff, and the general public will be the main factor in our decision to cancel.

- Refunds for other purchased items such as merchandise, meal tickets, bunkhouses is possible if we have not already had to pay for those items. Please inquire about these when you email us to cancel your race.
