Overview

The Teanaway Country 50 miler (actual mileage is 53.7) is a tough and incredibly scenic alpine race in the Cascade Mountain Range in eastern Washington state. With about 16,000 feet of elevation gain in remote and rugged terrain this point to point course is not to be taken lightly. This 50 miler is harder than some 100 milers. Runners should be prepared for steep and extremely technical trails, long hours between aid stations, and miles that can be tougher than you’d expect. That said, this race is so mind-blowingly beautiful and wild and rugged, it will reward you big time for your efforts.

  • This race is stunning and really, really, really hard
  • "Point to Point" style race route
  • Six aid stations with an incredible community of volunteers
  • Crew allowed at half of the aid stations
  • Elevation gain: ~16,000ft
  • 24 hour cutoff
  • Less than a two hour drive from Seattle
  • Weather can be warm during the day and cold at night. Rain, snow and lightning storms are possible.
  • The course is all dirt, mostly beautiful single track trail, often rugged, occasionally smooth.

Registration

  • $250 (includes all fees and taxes) before September 1st
  • $275 (includes all fees and taxes) after August 31st

See our Cancellation Page for more details and to cancel your registration.

Course
The Teanaway Country 50M (actual distance ~53.7 miles) will challenge folks of all levels. Rocky and rough terrain. Long, steep hills. Big distances between aid stations. Mountain weather. This is wild and remote country. Rescue, if needed, could take many hours so you'll need to be prepared.

September in the high mountains of Washington can be a bit of a mixed bag weather wise. The days could be very warm even hot. And the nights quite cool, not unusual to drop below freezing. There’s potential for wind, rain, snow and lightning storms. Folks should carry with them multiple layers and have spares in their drop bags to accommodate the variable weather.

Though unlikely you will see them, you should be prepared for possible encounters with rattlesnakes, black bears, cougars, and even wolves.
There will be six aid station locations and you will go through each of them once. They are on average 8.3 miles apart and the furthest distance is 10.6 miles between stations and given the rugged terrain and elevation gain it's going to take you a few hours (under the best circumstances) to go between aid stations. We recommend that you carry at least 40 ounces of water and at least enough food to last three to four hours.

The course is mostly a "point to point" style route following the first half of the Teanaway Country 100M. The race starts at Salmon La Sac Sno Park and runs 50 miles to Teanaway Ridge then drops back down to Miller-Bear Trailhead and finishes there at mile 53.7.

Aid Stations

There will be six full service aid stations fully stocked with water, assorted gels, Gnarly electrolyte drink, chips, fresh fruit, chocolate, pb & j sandwiches, soda, hot water, and hot soup/broth.  Each aid station will also have their own special food (quesadillas, bacon, perogies, sushi rolls, etc).  Our aid station volunteers are very experienced and we promise to take good care of you and keep you well fueled while you are running. However, if there is anything specific you want at the aid stations, you should leave them in your drop bag.

Cut-offs

In order to keep our race on schedule and within the time limits of our permits, we have cut off times at the aid stations. However please note that the Van Epps and Gallaher Lake Aid stations are extremely remote and only accessed by 4x4s, so we STRONGLY discourage runners from dropping here except in case of emergency. We want all of you to make it, but if you feel like you need to drop please do so at Iron Peak, Beverly Turnpike, or Miller Peak Aid Stations where we will have folks available to shuttle you back to the finish.

Although these are public trails, you are participating on them as a registered participant of our event and by signing up for the race, you agree to follow our rules and conditions for completing (or not completing) the race.  Our sweeps will be leaving right at cut off time, taking down course markings with them.  If you refuse to leave the course after cutoff and end up getting lost or injured, requiring search and rescue, our permitting agency could look at that as negligence on our end (allowing runners on the course with no course markings or after the time we agreed to stop people).  We take this rule seriously and as it puts our permits in jeopardy, if any runner violates this rule, they may be subject to a ban from future races.

The only cutoff time for the 50M course is 1:45am on Sunday at Mile 46.3 at Miller Peak Aid Station

Driving Directions, Crew Access & Parking Pass Needed

Every vehicle will need a Northwest Forest Pass or America the Beautiful Pass. The entire race is on US Forest Service land.

The 50M race start area is about 30 minutes north of the closest town (Ronald, WA) at the Salmon La Sac Sno Park which is on Forest Service Rd 4315 about a quarter mile off of Salmon La Sac Rd. (WA-903). WATCH OUT FOR SPEED TRAPS AND DEER! Give yourself extra time so you can go slow.

Crew are only allowed at these aid stations: Iron Peak, Beverly Turnpike and Miller Peak. Each will require a certain amount of walking from where your crew parks to the aid station location and it's an uphill walk for Iron Peak and Beverly; flat walk to Miller.

The 50M race finish is at Miller-Bear Trailhead (which is also where the Miller Peak Aid Station is).
Driving Directions

Transportation Back to the Start
You can have your crew pick you up or a volunteer will shuttle you back to the start. Keep in mind if you are being shuttled you may have to wait a little while, so be sure to have everything you need at the finish in your Miller Aid Station drop bag (the 50M finish is at the Miller Peak Aid Station). Once you get back to the start (where the 100 milers finish) we’ll have hot food and lots of great folks around to celebrate your return!

Pacers

No pacers for this race.

Volunteers

Volunteering for the Teanaway Country 100M & 50M is a special thing. You're there for a long time just like the runners. You are exposed to the elements just like the runners. And with Teanaway being an out and back race you really get to know the runners. It's a shared experience. And you really matter. You can really help a runner make it to the finish and make their dreams come true. It's a cool thing.

We have several volunteer roles available!  Volunteers
earn all kinds of perks; they get to eat and drink for free, receive a free volunteer t-shirt, and earn credit towards a future Rainshadow event!

Cancellations

By attending one of our events you agree to accept the terms of and abide by our cancellation policies, our COVID precautions, our event rules, our anti-discrimination policies and any other logistics or arrangements you that must adhere to. Please don't ask for an exception to our cancellation policies, we've given them a lot of consideration and have tried to be as generous as we can. If you would like to get more information about any of this or discuss things further please email us at [email protected]

If You Need to/Choose to Cancel Your Registration...

Please fill out this form before event day to let us know you will not be participating. We do not issue refunds, but depending on when you fill out the form you may be eligible for a rollover or credit. The amount of credit is based on when your cancellation form was submitted (see below). The credit can be used for any Rainshadow event and will be good for two years from the date we email you your coupon code.

If you cancel 31 days or more in advance, you have two options:

Option 1, you can rollover 100% of your entry fee to the same event the following year, including any other add-on charges you selected (merch, meal tickets for guests, etc.). You cannot be rolled over to a different event, only to the same event the following year, and you may only use the rollover option one time per registration. Also please note that if we do not hold that event the following year, you will be issued a 50% credit.

Option 2, receive a 50% credit that you can use for any of our events  + 100% of merchandise or anything else extra you may have ordered.

If you cancel less than 31 days before the event, rollovers are no longer an option, but you may be eligible for a credit based on when you cancel:

30 days to 7 days before event day: 50% of your entry fee + 50% of merchandise or anything else extra you ordered.

Less than 7 days before event day or after the event: No credits will be issued. This includes entry fees, merchandise and anything else you ordered.

No Bib transfers:
We do not allow folks to transfer or sell their bib or registration to another person. Any participants who give away their bib, or run under a different name, are subject to being permanently banned from our events.

If Rainshadow Cancels an Event...

If we have to cancel an event for any reason (COVID, wildfire, acts of nature, etc.) we understand the disappointment to the participants. But it's something that does happen from time to time so you should be aware of that possibility and understand that when signing up there is that risk.

In the event of a cancellation we will do our best to notify folks as soon as we can but sometimes it may be a last minute situation. All participants will be sent an email as soon as possible with information about the cancellation. If the reason for cancelling the event is something out of our control like (dangerous weather, COVID shutdowns, etc.) we will likely offer folks a 50% credit towards a future event. If we are forced to cancel an event once it's already begun no credits will be issued. We do not issue refunds for any reason.

We understand how much money, energy, and time goes into training for these events, so if we can make adjustments to our race plans instead of cancelling, that is our priority, but at the end of the day, the safety of the participants, volunteers, staff, and the general public will be the main factor in our decision to cancel.

Reminder:
By registering for one of our events you agreed to accept the terms of and abide by our cancellation policy, our COVID precautions, our event rules and any other logistics or arrangements you must adhere to. Please don't ask for an exception to our cancellation policies, we've given them a lot of consideration and have tried to be as generous as we can.
