OCTOBER 25-27 2024
DECEPTION PASS STATE PARK -- OAK HARBOR, WA
Overview
Join us for a weekend of connection and exploration at Deception Pass State Park. Runs and hikes on the park's trails will be offered Friday, Saturday and Sunday as well as other fun group activities and meals. Use the weekend to relax while simultaneously getting in your mileage. Treat it like a challenge and see how much of the park you can explore or come get a taste of what trail running is like in a low stress, non-competitive and supportive environment. Or use it as training for our Deception Pass 50K or 25K races in December. Friday and Sunday will be shorter jaunts (in the one to two hour range) with Saturday providing the best opportunity to cover as much or as little ground as you'd like (options for anywhere from one to eight plus hours). We'll provide the support and infrastructure so you can just have fun!
Deception Pass is where the Swinomish People and their descendants have lived since Time Immemorial. To find out more about the Swinomish click here. We will waive the entry fee for any Swinomish Tribe Members who would like to attend the retreat, please email us at [email protected]

Bunkhouse Lodging Friday & Saturday Nights
We have the awesome benefit of hosting this event at the seaside Cornet Bay Retreat Center. This "summer camp" makes for a fun and very social home base for the weekend.
You can check in as early as 3pm on Friday and you need to check out by 3pm on Sunday. We highly recommend arriving before 5pm on Friday to join us for the opening ceremony in which we'll go over all the logistics.
The accommodations are rustic, think summer camp. These are bunkhouses with bunk beds. They're not fancy at all and you'll be in close proximity to others. These dormitory style bunkhouses include bathrooms with toilets, sinks and showers. The bunkhouses all have electric heat and electric lights and electric outlets. No wifi. And cell service is spotty or non-existent.
A mattress is provided but you'll need to bring your own towel, bedding (sheets, blankets or sleeping bag, pillow), earplugs and toiletries. The bathrooms will have toilet paper, hand soap, and paper towels.
We'll have options for folks to request to be in gender specific or co-ed bunkhouses, or in the same bunkhouse as your friends or family.
No pets, no smoking, no firearms, no fireworks. If you're sick or showing any symptoms please stay home.
Parking is limited, carpooling is encouraged.

Route Options & Details
Each day there will be multiple options for runs and hikes for folks to choose from. There will be at least two marked routes to choose from each day plus more on Saturday. There will also be the ability to modify the routes to make them shorter or longer. And folks don't have to run or hike every day. There are plenty of other things to do at the park or you can just relax or even volunteer with meal prep at the retreat center or at one of the aid stations.
Friday: Sunset 10K & 5K
Friday's run and hike options will be as day turns to night so the routes will take us to some of the best spots to watch the sunset. There will be a 5K and a 10K marked route and both routes start the same way by going up to the park's high point Goose Rock. The 5K will descend down the other side of the mountain and follow along the water's edge back to the retreat center. The 10K will go the opposite way along North Beach Trail to the West Beach Trail and then back along the Cranberry Lake Trail. If you're new to being on trails at night this will be a fun and safe way to get comfortable with being out in the woods in the dark in a group setting and to practice using your light. The 10K will have about 1000ft of elevation gain. The 5K will have about 650ft of elevation gain.
Saturday: Deception Pass 25K, 20K, 10M, 10K (and more options)
Saturday we'll use our Deception Pass 25K race course as the foundation for the many route options to choose from. Again there will be options to go further than 25K or less than 25K if you want. The 25K race route doesn't start and finish at the retreat center but for this day we'll start at the retreat center and make our way to the North Beach Amphitheater, the race start/finish area, which is less than two miles from the retreat center. And from amphitheater the 25K route then follows the 25K race route from start to finish except when you're almost to the very end of the 25K racecourse when you're right by the retreat center you'll stop there because you already did the last two miles of the race course at the very beginning. For folks wanting shorter options you'll basically follow the 25K route but at one point you'll take a short cut. There will be options for 20K, 10 miles, and a couple of different 10K options including one that doesn't cross the Deception Pass bridge. For folks who want options longer than 25K you can either repeat parts of the 25K course again or follow the Pacific Northwest Trail route north to the nearby Anacortes Community Forest where there are many miles of additional beautiful trails, including those that go up Mt Erie. The 25K route has about 3300ft of elevation gain. The 20K will have just over 3000ft of gain. The 10 mile option will have around 2300-2500ft of gain. The 10K options will have 1000ft of gain or less.
Sunday: Hoypus 9M, 10K, 5K
Sunday we'll have 9M, 10K, and 5K options. We'll use the 2nd half of Deception Pass 50K race course as the framework for this day's options. The Deception Pass 50K follows the Deception Pass 25K race course for the first half and then at about the halfway point in the race the course goes right through the retreat center and then follows the scenic, seaside Cornet Bay Road for about a mile to the Hoypus Trails at the end of the road. The race route then does a 10K loop on the Hoypus Trails twice and then heads back to the retreat center and then to the finish at the amphitheater. The two main retreat routes are a 9 mile option that goes from the retreat center to Hoypus, does the full 10k loop there and then goes back to the retreat center. For folks who want to do something shorter we recommend driving to the Hoypus Trailhead from the retreat center and doing just the 10K Hoypus Loop or there will be a short cut marked to do just half the loop for a 5K. The nine mile option will have about 650ft of gain, the 10K will have about 600ft and the 5K will have about 500ft.

Aid Stations & Drop Bags for Saturday
On Saturday we'll provide aid stations in two locations: Bowman Bay and at the Retreat Center. No aid stations on Friday and Sunday.
The Bowman Bay aid station will be a full service aid station (see below for what will be available). The Retreat Center aid station will have everything Bowman Bay will have PLUS fresh made pizza and a few other extra special goodies. GF, vegan and vegetarian pizza will be available.
The aid stations will be stocked with water, soda, Gnarly electrolyte drink, energy gels, peanut butter & jelly sandwiches, fresh fruit, chips, pickles, and assorted cookies or candy. There will also be first aid supplies and menstrual hygiene products for issues that arise on the course.
Folks can also have a drop bag at the aid stations.
For those not familiar with drop bags, it's a way for you to have certain items at specific aid stations. If you like to have a certain kind of nutrition or specific brand of electrolyte, you can put those in your bag and restock at the aid station instead of carrying it the whole way. Some people leave extra layers of clothing, gloves or hats, or dry socks in their bags. Runners are responsible for providing their own bag.
We'll do our best to keep the drop bags dry but just in case, especially if precipitation is in the forecast, we recommend using a waterproof bag like a dry bag/waterproof stuff sack/EQPD GearBucket or a large zip lock or at least put your stuff that you definitely need to stay dry (like change of clothes) in smaller zip loc bags.

If Rainshadow Cancels an Event...
If we have to cancel an event for any reason (COVID, wildfire, acts of nature, etc.) we understand the disappointment to the participants. But it's something that does happen from time to time so you should be prepared for that possibility.
We will do our best to notify folks as soon as we can but sometimes it may be a last minute situation.
Everyone will be sent an email as soon as possible with information about the cancellation and any other pertinent info including what their options are and the deadline for letting us know their decision. If the reason for cancelling the race is something out of our control like something weather or COVID related we will likely offer runners a 50% credit towards a future event. As we see it, this way both the participants and Rainshadow share the risk of a cancelled race equally.
We understand how much money, energy, and time goes into training for events like these, so if we can make adjustments to our plans instead of cancelling, that is our priority, but at the end of the day, the safety of our participants, volunteers, staff, and the general public will be the main factor in our decision to cancel.
